Diabetic Retinal Health Programs & Services

Did you know that an estimated 58% of people with diabetes neglect to get sight-saving eye exams? Diabetic eye diseases are among the most preventable causes of blindness.

Together, We Can Prevent Vision Loss

Primary care and general practices are in an ideal position to screen diabetic patients for sight-threatening conditions before sight loss occurs. iCare Health Solutions offers a suite of retinal screening and analysis services for practices of all capabilities and sizes.

As a doctor-owned organization with more than 30 years of eye-health experience, iCare Health Solutions provides the capabilities you need to screen, analyze, diagnose, and refer diabetic patients, so they get the retinal care they need.

How iCare Works With You

iCare offers scalable, HIPAA-compliant solutions to facilitate in-office retinal screenings at your practice. We offer a number of options to best meet the needs of your practice and patients.

Eye Exam for Patient with Diabetes (EED) at your practice

iCare will work with your administrative staff to coordinate events for your patients to have their EED screening at your office.

Step 1: We will provide the personnel and equipment necessary to complete the screenings. For health plan partners we’re currently contracted with, there is no cost to you or your patients for this service.

Step 2: Results of the patient’s diagnosis are provided to the patient’s primary care physician within 3 business days.

Camera loan program

For MSOs or large practices that have significant numbers of noncompliant diabetic retinal exam (DRE) patients, iCare can loan the equipment and provide the staff training necessary to complete DRE screenings for your patients at one or more of your office locations.

Step 1: Your trained staff members will capture each patient’s retinal images using an FDA-approved non-mydriatic camera supplied by iCare.

Step 2: Your staff uploads retinal images to iCare’s HIPAA-compliant diagnostic interpretation portal.

Step 3: Ocular health providers review and render a diagnosis. There is no charge for iCare plan members.

Step 4: Results of the patient’s diagnosis are provided to the patient’s primary care physician within 3 business days.

I own or have access to a camera

iCare owns its own diagnostic interpretation services platform that is HIPAA-compliant and easy to use.

Step 1: Your practice conducts retinal screening and uploads retinal images to iCare’s portal.

Step 2: Ocular health providers review and render a diagnosis. There is no charge for iCare plan members.

Step 3: Results of the patient’s diagnosis are provided to the patient’s primary care physician within 3 business days.

Fee-for-service contract

For iCare’s contracted health plan members, there is no cost to you or the member to receive their diabetic retinal exam (DRE) screening. If you are interested in accessing any of the services outlined above for your patients who aren’t members of an iCare contracted health plan, iCare offers a stand-alone contract that will allow nonmembers to receive their DRE screening at a nominal fee per analysis.

Why Participate?

  • Increase the overall HEDIS measures and star rating for your practice.
  • By closing care gaps in-office, you help to improve patient compliance, which offers a return on investment for your practice.
  • Be part of the solution to reduce the overall cost of patient care.

A 2014 report by the NORC at the University of Chicago estimated that the total cost of retinal disease caused by diabetes to be $4.8 billion annually, but the costs do not stop there. Vision impairment leads to additional indirect costs that result from medication errors, productivity loss, trip and fall accidents, as well as the impact of vision loss on patient mental health.

With more than 100 million U.S. adults now living with diabetes or prediabetes, early detection can help reduce the economic burden of diabetic eye disease.

Our diabetic retinal exam outreach program contributed to CMS 5-star quality ratings for five of our health plan partners – find out more.
